ABOUT THIS PRODUCT
This small shield comes from the Sudan but owing to the fact that there are 56 ethnic groups in that country, we are unable to attribute it to a particular tribe. The individual who built this was most likely a nomadic herdsman. All of these Nile groups are great warriors as they have been in combat since the beginning of time. Their fierce reputation was confirmed in the late 19th century during the Mahdi revolt against the British.

This thick, shaved hide shield measures just under 14 across and bears the characteristic circle decoration and is unique in that it is not reinforced with any support materials. They tan the leather in a unique way that makes it incredibly rigid. The raised boss in the center is 5 across and allows the bearer ample room to grasp the thick leather handle. This shield is in excellent shape and looks to be at least 50 years old and possibly older. This interesting piece is the perfect size to hang on the side of one of our Rhodesian Teak Spear Spear/Cane holders.
