When we lost my father in 2014 it was a shock to all of us. I decided to “commission” special corkscrews for my siblings that would allow “Pops” to have a seat at the table every time a cork was pulled for a special meal, birthday or celebration. It is a one-off, just like him. Like all good things in life, this piece was only made possible by asking my friends for help.
- The trophy sized ivory warthog tusk is in the top 1% in terms of size (typically just under 9" around the curve) and weight, so the previous owner was a freak of nature. Corrie, an award winning custom knife maker from South Africa, collected them for me. Tusks this large are typically hoarded and knife makers are not known for their generosity in sharing scarce commodities.
- George is a retired precision machinist who used to fabricate metal parts for GM prototype cars. His retirement fund was dwindling and he wanted some work. I needed a “unicorn” that could translate product ideas I had in my head that no one else was willing to touch. He has been creating beautiful pieces for us since 2006 and out of respect for his skill I never ask what something costs and he has never taken advantage of our unwritten agreement. George polished the tusk, fitted the exotic African wood bulb and inlaid the nickel sized synthetic ivory medallion.
- Richard is the scrimshaw artist who adorned this piece. He does all the work for almost every Hollywood movie where a piece is scrimshawed.
The three friends above helped me translate an idea into a tangible product. It is my hope that the spirit behind this piece will give you some small comfort as you move through your own grieving process. $349 as shown with a 90 day delivery time.
