East Africa, Kenya, Maasai people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hefty elliptical Maasai buffalo hide shield constructed from thick, dark hide stretched over a wooden frame with a reinforced wood handle on the back. This hand-made example is a unique piece, with no two shields exactly alike. The hide surface retains faint traces of red, black, and white pigment arranged in geometric bands and crescents associated with lineage and warrior identity. The edge is tightly stitched and bound with rawhide thongs, giving the shield rigidity and strength. Used in battle, hunting, and ceremonial display, shields of this type served as both functional protection and visible symbols of rank and achievement. This one makes a strong, one-of-a-kind focal point for a trophy room or safari-themed office. Approximate size: 32" L x 25" W (81.3 cm x 63.5 cm).
